MANHASSET, N.Y. — Seeking to strengthen its European presence, Japan-based Toshiba Corp. has established a production and sales company for liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs to be located in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw, Poland.

Toshiba now builds LCD TVs in Europe at Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd. (TIU). The company expects to invest $51 million (¥6 billion over five years), and begin production there in 2007.

The Kobierzyce plant is located on a 226,500 square meter site. Toshiba expects to employ 1,000 there by 2010.

Toshiba expects to produce a combined total of 3 million units at Kobierzyce and TIU by fiscal 2007, primarily LCD TVs with screen sizes of 32 inches and higher.

According to analysts, demand for LCD TVs in Europe is expected to grow from 8.7 million units in fiscal 2005 to 33 million units by fiscal 2009.
